Our work with big cats
For more than 25 years, FOUR PAWS has worked towards improving the lives of animals through sustainable campaigns, projects, and rescues. As part of our work for captive wild animals, we focus on issues concerning big cats in private keeping, the entertainment industry, and substandard zoos.
Around the world, countless numbers of big cats are forced to live and suffer in circuses, badly-run zoos, or inadequate private keeping. Many are kept in extremely cramped conditions, are incorrectly or insufficiently fed, suffer from poor health, and exhibit behavioral disorders. Big cats raised in captivity cannot be released into the wild and with so many in need of a forever safe home, FOUR PAWS decided to create a sanctuary in South Africa for big cats and wildlife in need in 2007.
Our Big Cat Sanctuary LIONSROCK and big cat rescue centers FELIDA and TIERART allow us to provide immediate assistance to big cats in need, while we continue pursuing our global long-term goals of achieving significant political, economic, and social improvements in the treatment of wild animals in captivity.
