Devastating fires in South Africa: FOUR PAWS provides emergency help for animals in need

The severe fires around Cape Town this week have caused devastating damage. FOUR PAWS together with the authorities has put together an emergency relief team on site to help the injured wild animals. Houses were destroyed, residents had to flee. Several thousand hectares were destroyed by the fires. The  Table Mountain National Park, home to thousands of wild animals, has been much affected.

Regular updates about the situation on site are provided via our South African facebook fanpage.

Countless animals have been injured by the fire

Meanwhile, the flames have been brought under control. Thus, the animal welfare workers - supported by volunteers – can start looking for injured animals. This mainly affects baboons, tortoises, hedgehogs, snakes, reptiles, birds and caracal. Fiona Miles, Country Manager FOUR PAWS South Africa: "We help where we can. Yesterday we took care of several baboons with severe burn injuries. "
